Why is Subway so famous?


The Subway restaurant chain is a multinational fast-food corporation specializing in submarine sandwiches, wraps, salads, and drinks.

Called initially Pete’s Super Submarines, Subway was founded in 1965 by Fred DeLuca and financed by Peter Buck. Several name changes occurred in the beginning years. This was finally resolved in 1972 with the renaming of Subway, and franchise operations began in 1974 with the opening of a second restaurant in Wallingford, Connecticut. As it has grown over time, it has become a global franchise.

As of June 2021, it has 37,540 locations in over 100 countries and territories worldwide, making it the fastest-growing franchise in the world in 2015. More than half of its sites (21,796 or 58.1%) find in the United States. Also, it is the leading single-brand restaurant chain in the world and the largest restaurant operator worldwide. Milford, Connecticut, is the location of its international headquarters.

The worldwide network of Subway locations, all owned independently, consists of approximately 41,600 outlets as of June 2021. are located in North America, with 21,796 in the United States, 2,881 in Canada, and 758 in Mexico. Brazil (approximately 1,643) and Australia (1,215) (about 2,195) are the countries with the most locations outside North America.

The products include:

Sandwiches from Subway Club 6″ Submarine sandwiches (also called “subs”) are the core product of Subway. Furthermore, the chain also sells wraps, salads, paninis, and baked goods (such as cookies, doughnuts, and muffins) in addition to these items. The B.M.T. sandwich is one of Subway’s best-selling sandwiches and consists of pepperoni, salami, and ham, which makes it one of its most popular sandwiches.

Breakfast sandwiches and English muffins, and flatbread are also available at Subway. The first “personal pizzas” were introduced to some U.S. markets in 2006. In the same way as the subs, these are made to order and reheated for 85 seconds. You can only find breakfast and pizza items at specific locations. Zagat rated Subway as the best “Healthy Options” provider in its “Mega Chains” category in a 2009 survey conducted by Zagat. Subway was number one in the “Top Service” and “Most Popular” categories. In the “Top Overall” category, it came in second after Wendy’s.

The four variations announced so far include the Chipotle Steak & Cheese, the Triple Cheese, the Chicken Cordon Bleu, and the Italian B.M.T. Melt. In September 2018, Subway launched a limited edition Chipotle Cheesesteak sandwich for a limited time only.

Variations by region:

In 2006, the Mandel Jewish Community Center of Cleveland opened the first kosher Subway restaurant in the United States. Former Subway spokesperson Jared Fogle attended the event. “Other restaurants soon opened, making Subway one of the largest kosher chains in the United States. There were twelve kosher Subway locations in the U.S. at their peak, including five in New York and one in Kansas City. There were only five remaining stores in 2011: two in Maryland, one in Cleveland, one in Miami, and one in Los Angeles. Many failed franchisees cited a need for more Sponsorship from the parent location, higher costs of kosher food, and the inability to remain open on Saturdays.

In 2001, Subway opened its first restaurant in India in New Delhi. Due to Hindu beliefs, Subway restaurants in India do not serve beef; on the other hand, the country’s sizeable vegetarian population caused Subway to expand its vegetarian menu. The number of Subway restaurants in Indian cities reached 591 in January 2017. As of March 6, 2013, Subway opened its second vegetarian outlet in Paldi, Ahmedabad, offering Jain food.

The history:

Peter Buck loaned Fred DeLuca $1,000 in 1965 for “Pete’s Drive-In: Super Submarines” in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Luca and Buck have doctorates in physics, and their holding company was named after their goal to earn enough to fund medical school tuition. Subway began as a sandwich shop in 1968. In 1968, the sandwich shop was renamed “Subway.” The Wallingford restaurant in Connecticut was the first franchise operation in 1974.

Pittsfield Township, Michigan, is home to a Subway restaurant (2011). On the West Coast, the first Subway opened in Fresno, California, in 1978. In December 1984, Subway opened its doors outside North America in Bahrain for the first time. The first Subway restaurant in the United Kingdom was opened in Brighton in 1996. Since Subway began opening stores in Walmart supercenters in 2004, it has surpassed McDonald’s in terms of the number of locations inside U.S. Walmart stores by the end of 2007.

In marketing:

In the United States, Subway is second only to McDonald’s as the most prominent fast food advertiser.
