Born on 26 September 1923, Anand was Dharamdev Pishorimal Anand Shakargarh tehsil of the Gurdaspur district of Punjab (British India) in the Punjab province. As a child, he was raised by the well-to-do Pishori Lal Anand, an advocate in the Gurdaspur District Court. The third son of Anand, Dev was the oldest of the four sons he had. Dev’s younger sister Sheel Kanta Kapur, the mother of film director Shekhar Kapur, is one of Dev’s younger sisters.
The older brothers of Vijay Anand are Manmohan Anand (Advocate, Gurdaspur District Court) and Chetan Anand, while the younger brother is Manmohan Anand. As part of his schooling, he went to Dalhousie Sacred Heart School (then in Punjab) until matriculation, then Government College Dharamshala before going to Lahore to study. Dev completed a B.A. in English Literature from the Government College, Lahore, in British India, where he studied for four years. He is a member of the Anand family and founded Navketan Films with his elder brother Chetan Anand in 1949.
